Supplier Management

As with any dealings with partners, supplier management also requires clear specifications and guidelines for successful cooperation.

Our suppliers are important partners of the company, with whom we strive for fair business relationships based on a spirit of partnership. A constructive dialog and close cooperation form the solid framework for the purchase of high-quality goods that were manufactured under the most socially compatible and environmentally friendly conditions possible.

Suppliers with whom we work must undertake to comply with our quality and sustainability requirements.

We have defined the respective requirements for this in various specifications and guidelines that are mandatory for suppliers. Our buyers take these into account when selecting suppliers. The purchasing guidelines include the Supplier Manual, the Supplier Code of Conduct and the Dr. Oetker Food Standard. As part of our supplier management, we continuously adapt these documents, for example if requirements change or if we have identified other key sustainability aspects.

Supplier Manual and Supplier Code of Conduct

In the Supplier Manual and in the Supplier Code of Conduct, we specify not only the high quality standards, but also the requirements for the careful use of natural resources and compliance with internationally recognized social standards, both in our own production and at our suppliers. The required standards are in accordance with the provisions of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Accordingly, Dr. Oetker does not tolerate child labor or forced labor in the supply companies or at their subcontractors and the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining must be guaranteed. The weekly working hours as well as the maximum daily working hours must at least correspond to the national laws and guidelines. Furthermore, wages must meet the statutory or industrial minimum standard – whichever is higher.

Dr. Oetker Food Standard

The Dr. Oetker Food Standard supplements the Supplier Manual and the Supplier Code of Conduct with requirements that specifically concern the raw materials and products supplied. In addition to requirements regarding quality, food safety and traceability, sustainability requirements for certain raw materials are also defined. For example, sustainability certificates must be available for palm oil, cocoa and chocolate, tuna must be caught in a dolphin-friendly manner, and the use of antibiotics on animals for meat products is only allowed to treat diseases. Chicken, eggs and egg products may only come from barn hens. In addition, the use of genetically modified raw materials is excluded.

Our Supplier Evaluation System

In addition to the purchasing standards, we have developed an evaluation system for our suppliers that supports our buyers in assessing and developing suppliers. The suppliers are evaluated with demanding test procedures with regard to the quality of the goods and according to sustainability criteria such as occupational safety, health management, environmental protection, human rights, working conditions and anti-corruption. With the successful completion of the multi-stage evaluation process, also known as auditing, suppliers qualify for Dr. Oetker. Corrective measures are initiated and implemented in the event of only slight to moderate deviations from the requirements. If a potential supplier shows that he is not cooperative or able to implement corrective measures, he will be blocked by Dr. Oetker. Even with successfully qualified suppliers, regular controls follow in order to guarantee compliance with all requirements in the long term.
